The One by John Marrs #bookreview

One simple mouth swab is all it takes. A quick DNA test to find your perfect partner – the one you’re genetically made for.
A decade after scientists discover everyone has a gene they share with just one other person, millions have taken the test, desperate to find true love. Now, five more people meet their Match. But even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking – and deadlier – than others…
A psychological thriller with a difference, this is a truly unique novel which is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The one is a psychological thriller with a difference. A truly original concept that keeps you gripped from the first page to the very last word.

In a world where you can just do one simple test to find you genetic true love, thousands of people have been heart-broken, besotted and raised to the heights of a love stronger than anyone could imagine. They only problem is you have no control over who you are matched with, what happens when a police officer is matched with a serial killer? Or a multi-billionaire with a regular Joe? Or what happens when you met that one true love but then lose them to death? These situations and more like them are explored in The One.

Set in a contemporary England I could really see myself in a lot of the characters. For so many people finding ‘The One’ is the most important aspect of a person’s life, what happens when that part is over? Also finding your one true love didn’t guarantee a happy ever after story for everyone.

I liked this novel’s gritty realness and cynical take on love, especially love you buy purchase online. In an age when love is harder to find but easier to arrange online, this novel is a cautionary tale of taking things on step too far.
